We are excited that horseback trail rides are available again in Denali. This is a great way to see the scenery up-close. We are sure you will enjoy this trip provided by a local company! This provider is a small family-owned and operated business located in Healy, Alaska, just few minutes from the Denali National Park entrance. They live here year-round and would like to share their Alaskan lifestyle with you! Ride with them into some of the most spectacular back country in the world, under the midnight sun of Alaska’s north!
Here is what you can expect: Many of their guests have little or no riding experience. Experienced rider or novice, they have the right horse and the right adventure for you. The groups are kept small allowing your wrangler/guide to help with riding instructions and share information and stories about Denali area.
They offer 3 1/2-hour, half-day and full-day horseback tours. Transportation from & back to the Wilderness Access Center is included. If their regular pick up times don't fit your schedule, they will try to accommodate you if they can, just ask us! Their horses vary in size and temperament but don't worry, they try to pick the right horse for each rider based on his/her riding experience, skills and physique. So let us know what your experience and include your height and weight.
After they introduce you to your horse you go through a short safety orientation. Helmets, bug spray and gloves are available. When everyone has been assisted in mounting their horse, stirrups adjusted, the adventure begins!
You will leave their home, following mostly game trails that moose and other wildlife use more than they do. During the ride you'll learn about Alaskan fauna and flora, surrounding mountains, gold and coal mining in the area, permafrost and it's effects, what life is like in the winter-time and the best way to cook a moose ;-)
After the ride they are happy to show you some moose and caribou antlers, compare lynx and wolf skulls and check out a few old traps they found buried a foot under the tundra. If you are more of a horse-person, they will tell you about their "ponies", whether or not they like moose and how they ride at 20 below!
You should dress in layers since Alaskan weather can change very quickly. Wear long comfortable pants, no shorts. No sandals or open toe shoes. Boots, hiking or running shoes work good. And, make sure that you bring your camera! There are going to be some great photo opportunities and a good chance of viewing wildlife.
