What you need to know depends on how you are traveling to Denali. Please choose from the following options to learn more:

For Those Arriving on The Alaska Railroad Train

If you are capable of viewing a video Click Here to see a FANTASTIC one on arriving on the train and traveling to the WAC along with a map of the area. This video was produced by a very dear past employee and star of the flick, the lovely and extremely talented Sarah. It is a GREAT way to clearly understand the proceedure. THANK YOU Sarah for making this and letting us use it!

If you can't watch the video, here is how it works. As you depart the train, you will be facing a parking area and a road. Beyond that, you will see a large building, the Denali National Park Visitor’s Center. Across the road, in front of the Visitor’s Center, you will see a bus stop. There is a free shuttle that departs there about every 20-30 minutes. It is usually green, but can be tan, and is "school bus" style. It will take you to the Wilderness Access Center, or "The WAC". This free shuttle is called the Riley Creek Loop bus, and it goes by the Riley Creek Mercantile on the way to the WAC.

At the Mercantile, they have a selection of groceries, beer and wine. If you need groceries, take this bus to the Mercantile, get your groceries and take the next Riley Creek Loop bus to the WAC. But make sure you get back to the WAC before 5:30 or you will have to wait for our 9:30 PM shuttle. Please keep in mind that the morning shuttles will ONLY take you to the WAC or Denali Park Village, NOT the Market, so plan your grocery purchases accordingly. The WAC is where you can learn about and purchase your tickets for travel into the park. It is also where the bus trips into the park depart.

Our shuttle will pick you up at 5:30 PM at the WAC in the exact same place that the Riley Creek Loop bus dropped you off. There are multiple bus stops at the WAC, so please make sure you pay attention when you get off of the Riley Creek Loop bus. The bus stop where they will drop you off and where we will pick you up is called the Courtesy Shuttle - Riley Creek Loop Stop.

If you want to do some hiking while you are waiting for our shuttle, there are several trails nearby the Visitors Center or the WAC, and both places have lockers or storage space available to store your luggage. People coming in from Fairbanks find this especially useful.

REMEMBER, if you are not on the shuttle in time to leave at 5:30 PM, you will be left behind. The same goes for the 9:30 PM shuttle, but missing that one will cause you much bigger problems and expense finding a way to the hostel 14 miles away. Keep this in mind, too, when booking your travel into the Park. Our morning shuttles also MUST LEAVE ON TIME. We will not wait for you and we are unable to look for you. We have a schedule that other guests are depending on and deserve. This is your one last required responsibility while on vacation!

MORNING SHUTTLES TO THE PARK

Our first shuttle service leaves the hostel daily at 6:35 AM, getting you to the WAC (where all park shuttle buses and tours depart) by 7:00 AM. We also provide a shuttle at 8:20 AM, arriving at the WAC at about 8:40 AM. We Stop at Denali Park Village only if requested, so if you will be departing from Denali on the morning Park Connection Motorcoach, please make sure to let your shuttle driver know!

We have a sign-up board at the hostel office for you to use to sign up for shuttle use other than your original pick-up.

This means that you shouldn't make reservations for the Park Shuttles departing before 7:30 AM or returning after 9:00 PM unless you have your own vehicle. THERE IS NO EASY WAY FOR YOU TO RETURN TO THE HOSTEL FROM THE PARK AFTER 9:30 PM UNLESS YOU FIND A RIDE WITH SOMEONE, HITCHHIKE, PAY FOR AN EXPENSIVE TAXI, OR WALK THE 14 MILES.

Remember, be at the right place at the right time as our shuttles MUST leave on time.

For Those Arriving on The Park Connection Motorcoach

If you are on their 3:00 PM departure from Anchorage, ask The Park Connection Motorcoach to drop you off at Denali Park Village. Denali Park Village is located about half-way between the hostel and the Park Entrance. We will pick you up at the very same spot they drop you off on our way back from the Park at about 9:40 PM. Unfortunately you will not have a chance to buy groceries this night and should do so in Anchorage. You will have opportunities to shop for groceries during the remaining days of your stay.

If you have scheduled coming to Denali on the Park Connection Express Motorcoach leaving Anchorage in the morning, ask them drop you off at the train station. At the same spot they drop you off, there is a free shuttle that departs there about every 20-30 minutes. It is usually green, but can be tan, and is "school bus" style. It is called the Riley Creek Loop bus and it will take you to the Wilderness Access Center, or the "WAC". This shuttle goes by the Riley Creek Mercantile on the way to the WAC.
